MONTEREY RELEASES "BETWEEN US" DIRECTOR COMMENTARY TRACK ON SOUNDCLOUD FIRST DISTRIBUTOR TO EMBRACE SECOND-SOUND ENHANCED EXPERIENCE
April 27, 2015 Thousand Oaks, CA - monterey media and Bugeater Films today announced they were releasing the director/writer/DP commentary track for Dan Mirvish's award-winning film "Between Us" for free on SoundCloud, the popular audio distribution website and app. Starring Taye Diggs, Melissa George, David Harbour and Julia Stiles, "Between Us" is a tense drama based on the hit Off-Broadway play. The commentary track features director/co-screenwriter Dan Mirvish, playwright and co-screenwriter Joe Hortua, and director of photography Nancy Schreiber, ASC, and it is one of the first commentaries to be released on SoundCloud for a commercially released DVD.
"Since the inevitable decline of DVD, it's been frustrating for filmmakers and audiences alike that new streaming and VOD services don't have director commentary tracks available anymore," said Mirvish, also a co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival. "But with the advent of apps like SoundCloud, audiences can just watch the movie on whatever platform they want, mute the sound, and run the commentary on their phone, tablet or computer. They can even listen to the commentary by itself while they're working out, driving in their car, commuting on the subway, or even while watching a completely different movie."
"The commentary itself is a primer on how to write, cast, shoot and direct an independent film," added Jere Rae-Mansfield. "Dan, Joe and Nancy offer a wealth of tips and lessons applicable to any filmmaker, film student or film fan, and we're thrilled to be on the vanguard of this new media revolution."
"We've been hearing about the 'second-screen' phenomenon of enhanced viewing, but by making the commentary available through SoundCloud, we're encouraging the 'second-sound' enhancement of films, too," said Mirvish. "And for everyone who's watched the film already, you've now got a whole different way to experience it." After a 23-festival run and 50-city US theatrical release, "Between Us" is currently available on Netflix, Showtime, Starz, Amazon and numerous other VOD and streaming services in the US as well as outlets in 144 other countries.
A critically-acclaimed film, "Between Us" got a CriticWire average rating of "A-". It has been described as "a sleeper hit" by The Hollywood Reporter, "powerful and brilliant" by Buzzfeed, and "absolutely stunning" by FilmThreat. Mirvish garnered particular praise with favorable comparisons to John Cassavetes, Roman Polanski and Robert Altman. The four-person cast were universally praised for their searing performances and all received several career-best reviews. "Between Us" is a darkly comedic drama about two couples who reunite over the course of two incendiary evenings where anything can happen. The play originally premiered at Manhattan Theatre Club, and the film had its world premiere at the Oldenburg Film Festival in Germany, and its North American premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival. "Between Us" was also the Closing Night Film at the 50th Gijon International Film Festival in Spain. "Between Us" won the Grand Jury Prize at the Bahamas International Film Festival, and David Harbour won the Best Actor Award at the Woods Hole Film Festival.
